Ask Jeeves for Schools  http://www.ajschools.com - American, but has some useful links with separate pages for pupils and teachers.
BUBL Link Site http://www.bubl.ac.uk   - the site catalogues selected Internet resources according to Dewey numbers and subject headings.   Excellent browsing for librarians, in the knowledge that sites have been evaluated and checked by a team of librarians, with a "last checked" date and good summary for each resource.
Encyclopaedia Britannica http://www.britannica.com - full contents of the 32-volume reference work is available free.  A UK version of this site is expected early next year.  Meanwhile, Britannica's subscription service continues at www.eb.com for those who'd rather access their information without ads.
ERIC (Ask Eric)  http://ericir.syr.edu/ - "A personalized Internet-based service providing education information to teachers, librarians, counsellors, administrators, parents, and others throughout the United States and the world." Federally funded databank of education material which is searchable.

Find Articles  http://www.findarticles.com  - American, but this is a free articles search facility.
Glasgow City Libraries and Archives Online  http://www.libarch.glasgow.gov.uk - gives information about or access to: Digitisation projects, city archives, the Mitchell Library and Community Libraries.
Ingenta  http://www.ingenta.com  a large UK online academic research service,  which has articles from a list of 2,246 listed journals.  Ingenta works with 35 scientific and scholarly publisher including Academic Press, John Wiley and Elsevier Science.
Kevin Morrison Collection  http://www.lib.gcal.ac.uk/speccoll/morrison/index.htm - Second World War collection which has an emphasis on the social implications of a whole range of Home Front activities.
KnowUK  http://www.knowuk.co.uk - provides information on the people, institutions and organisations which influence, govern and make up the United Kingdom.
Public Record Office  http://www.pro.gov.uk - Original documents online from the Public Records Office.  Learning Curve Gallery provides resources and material for the National Grid for Learning.  View original documents, see current exhibition material.
SCRAN Scottish Cultural Resources Access Network   http://www.scran.ac.uk - "Scran's mission is to create a fully searchable resource base of Scottish material culture and human history"  Information being constantly added from museums, galleries, educational institutions.
UK Online  http://www.ukonline.gov.uk  - A straight forward site that gives government information, central and local, and services.
World Fact Book  http://www.odci.gov/cia/publications/factbook - facts and figures about countries.
Young Scot  http://www.youngscot.org  - Scottish young people's information portal.
