Current Awareness Service
Each term, a current awareness bulletin KEYNOTES is issued to schools.  This service is designed to support the Educational Development Team plan.  A range of periodicals have been identified as key to supporting the priorities of the Education Services department.  These periodicals are indexed and relevant articles are listed in Keynotes with a brief synopsis.

Periodicals indexed include: British Journal of Special Education; Early Years; Education Journal; Education Computing & Technology; Educational Leadership; Improving Schools; Literacy Today; Management in Education; Race Equality Teaching; Reading; Support for Learning.

Services to Primary, Special and Nursery Schools

The Educational Resource Service provides a wide range of services to schools within East Dunbartonshire.  The main areas of responsibility are outlined below.  Educational Resource Officers work on an area basis to ensure schools develop close links with their designated ERO. 

Lenzie and Kirkintilloch areas plus Meadowburn, St Helen's and St Matthew's: contact Linda Owens, Educational Resource Officer

Main areas of responsibility for work in schools:

  • establish and maintain library collections in schools, ensuring all stock is entered on a computer database

Pupils of Baljaffray Primary School, Bearsden are completing research in their new "infant library".  From an early age the pupils are taught library skills which will encourage them to become independent life-long learners.  Parental sponsorship and pupil fund-raising activities provided additional funding for the library.   Congratulations to all who gave so generously to make this possible.


  • give advice on planning, furniture and fittings for library and resource storage environments.
  • provide information and advice on resources to support the curriculum, ensuring sources of supply provide best value for the authority.
  • accompany schools when purchasing new resources.
  • provide information and advice on promoting reading for enjoyment.  Reading for Enjoyment teacher help sheet.
  • provide in-service on a wide range of issues including library database usage; selection and promotion of fiction and non-fiction stock; library and 'reading for information' skills.
